A powerful and soul-stirring show afterward, in the cold spring night at Sunken Gardens.

schoolgirls frozen in time

ursula's room hadn't changed a bit over the 13 years.
It was a comforting constant. I recharged there this week.

nestled in the bosom of my hometown

I sought solace from heart hurt
in the close, beer- and tripas-tinged air of
the market square conjunto festival.
Respite in the cramped and bustling line at the pan dulce counter.
Familiarity of strangers
and a kind gesture from another hungry soul.
I felt so centered and whole with
my roots reaching deep
into the fiesta-colored layers of my soul city.
